The IMS Study Group Opera and the Spanish Empire is pleased to announce the launch of its Seminar, to be held from 1 to 3 July 2026 in an online format and with no registration fee (only for group members)

The seminar will be conducted via Google Meet (link to be circulated in advance to registered participants) and will be free of charge. Each day will feature a two-hour session from 16:00 to 18:00 (Madrid time, CET).

Aims and Format

This seminar introduces a new working format within the group, conceived as a collaborative and discussion-oriented workshop. Its primary objective is to foster a more dynamic, productive, and collegial exchange of ideas, methodologies, and ongoing research projects among members.

Rather than formal conference-style presentations, the seminar prioritises works in progress, encouraging open dialogue and constructive feedback at intermediate stages of research development.

Structure

The programme will consist of three sessions (one per day), each including four presentations, for a total of 12 contributions. Each presentation will follow this format:

  • Short presentation (5 minutes): overview of the project

  • Collective discussion (25 minutes): structured feedback and open exchange

This format is designed to maximise interaction and provide meaningful input on each project’s: methodological approaches, historiographical positioning, conceptual framing, structure and argumentation, among others

Types of Contributions

Participants are invited to present ongoing research projects that are unpublished or not previously presented, and sufficiently developed to allow for informed discussion.

Possible formats include (but are not limited to):

  • journal articles in preparation

  • conference or panel proposals

  • research projects for funding applications

  • book chapters or monograph sections

Working Method

To ensure the success of the seminar, all participants will be required to circulate materials in advance (papers, abstracts, or drafts) and engage actively with the work of other participants.

This shared preparation is essential to maintain a high level of discussion and to foster a genuinely collaborative academic environment.

Participation and Selection

Participation is open to members of the group. In the event that the number of submissions exceeds available slots, the Chair and the Steering Committee will carry out a selection based on relevance to the group’s research focus and coherence with its thematic and methodological orientations
